The Contemporary Sayings of Epictetus

  1. Is it possible to describe how unimaginably blessed we are? We contain the very breath of God and a spark of his divine.  We have been given life, a mind of our own, and a will so free as to be able to reject him.  If we could comprehend His limitless generosity, we would spend every waking moment in praise and thanksgiving for what he has done for us.  We would thank Him for our hands as we toil, our backs as they ache, our breath as we slept.1
  2. Don’t be distracted by the seductions of life which are transitory and but part of our voyage.  Remember who you are, where you come from, and what is your final destination.  Enjoy the journey but focus on the objective.2
  3. Life is about relationships. Enjoy the life you have.3
  4. We are ultimately responsible only to God who has given us the one gift for exercising that one responsibility, our own free will.4
  5. If you focus on flattering the teacher, your likely to miss the lesson. Actions are the best response to lessons.5
  6. Be content. We are frail jars, formed of clay from the the dust of the earth; but those jars contain the very breath of God that give us a will and a conscience. If we but hold true to that we will never truly be hindered; never bemoan or blame.6
  7. Virtue is its own good, but greatness is virtue exercised in the face of criticism, slander, and unpopularity.7
